I love musicals. I never had a chance to see any of my favorites on Broadway, mostly because I’m broke and live a bit too far from NYC. So, instead I am stuck with the film versions and original cast recordings of said musicals.
However, there is one musical that must be destroyed before it reaches the stages of Broadway and that my friends is the atrocity that is High School Musical. I’ll admit that I was never able to sit through the entire thing, and I was only able to watch for about fifteen minutes before switching to a different channel to escape the garbage. The songs are mediocre, the plot is pathetic, and the acting is atrocious. It’s so predictable and boring, yet for some reason the little teeny boppers cannot get enough of it. HSM should not even be considered a musical! Anyone with any bit of intelligence would agree that it is crap!
Unfortunately, the hype of HSM thanks to the teeny boppers caused Disney to make a sequel to this gawd awful garbage. Why, Disney? Why must you torture us like this? They even have a version on ice! Good God, why? Other things that this crap spawned are book series, a video game (what the hell?), a reality show in Mexico and Argentina to cast the actors for the Mexican version, a documentary, and dolls. Oh dear God. WHY?!
What really makes me cry is seeing a giant billboard advertising to see this tragedy at one of the local theaters. The only thing that can make it worse are the rumors concerning if this “musical” is going to be on Broadway or not. I really hope it flops on Broadway and I’m sure that the critics will rip this thing to shreds. Also, what kind of self respecting actor would audition for this?
*crickets* I thought so.
This “musical” (if you can even call it that) should not be on the Broadway. It is no where near the greatness of The Phantom of the Opera, Grease, or any of the other great shows that Broadway has to offer. Disney does have great musicals on Broadway, however they were based off of successful full feature films that were released in movie theaters — there are no made-for-TV films that deserve this insanity. There is a reason why it is made-for-TV, because it is too mediocre to show in theaters. Sure, there are lots of bad movies that are playing in theaters, but at least they passed some expectations than like a Lifetime movie.
Can someone please fill me in why this pathetic excuse for a musical film is so popular?

im assuming youre older than 18, so im going to just let you in a little hint: shhh! dont tell anyone….but High School Musical wasnt made for your age group! It was created for tweens – median age range of 12! Those other plays you mentioned were created for adults. You shouldn’t be crying about younger children enjoying something.
Also you mention you havent been to a bway play in a long time, as a NY resident, I’ll also let you know most of whats on bway right now is crap. Its a bunch of musicals based on movies, or musicians music. Theres rarely a new idea anymore…the best stuff thats out there is a rare gem or a revival.
I also greatly dislike when people judge something they havent sat through entirely. Im 25, first of all. And I think the music in High School Musical is great. Sure, its no “Grease” or “Phantom of the Opera”, but it wasnt created to hit those standards – it was a simple made for tv movie. No one expected it to have this cult success. If you had the correct singers, dancers and musicians – they would do a great job with them. As far as the acting – its a Disney Channel Movie … what did you expect? They, again, are acting for kids, not adults, so they are a bit over the top. And for the plot being dumb – the plot *is* Grease. So if you think HSM’s plot is dumb, you think Grease’s plot is dumb.
Anyway, Ill tell you why this musical film is so popular. Its because someone finally made something entertaining for kids that doesn’t talk down to them.
What do you want to bash next – Sesame Street? Have you seen Big Bird? He doesn’t even look like a real bird! God!

Comment by sir Tuesday, December 4, 2007 @ 4:26 AMI HATE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL!!!!!!! I haven’t even seen the whole thing because twenty minutes in I found myself softly repeating the word “REDRUM” while rocking back and forth on my couch. And whoever said “You shouldn’t be crying about younger children enjoying something”… You SHOULD!!!! Kids who watch High School Musical are likely to imitate what they see on TV. THEREFORE, they are 100 times more likely to be the reason I go on a murderous rampage one day.
HAVE A NICE DAY!!!! ;D
Comment by CARTMAN1993 Wednesday, April 9, 2008 @ 4:47 PMI am not alone…there are people out there who don’t like High School Musical!!! There is hope left after all.
Unlike you, I sat through the entire affair and it grates on my nerves every time I hear it mentioned or horrors!!! its sequel.
I was in for a shock when I realised that some people actually like it and from my own personal experience it’s not the age group. One of my dorm-mates was planning to watch it last year and I remember blurting out loud : “Don’t! It sucks!!! It is so dumb.” At that precise moment my other dorm – mate had started gushing as to how much she had adored it! very, very awkward. On the other hand, my young niece (I am proud to say) can’t stand it. She switches to Animax every time Disney decides to play one of the songs.
To each his own, eh?
